Task: Craft a Chromatically Rich and Luminous Image
Color & Retouching
In this photograph, Nature provided a superb color palette. It was merely my job to edit the original capture to reveal the richness and beauty of the colors inherent in this dynamic flower—a bird of paradise.
The retouching was minimal. I approached it with two things in mind. I considered what was distracting to the overall composition, and asked I myself ‘If this photo was selected for a cover of a garden book, how would I retouch it to make it cover-worthy?’
The Design Process
Color Transformation First, Then Build Your Palette
For any design project, where color selection will be guided by photographs in the layout, the best-practice workflow is to correct-color first, then choose your palette. In this photo, with the chroma of the orange intensified and the blue and greens brightened, the designer now has a lush palette from which to base a design.

Nature As Your Guide
Are you looking for inspiration in selecting colors, or need guidance in creating harmonious color palettes? Turn to Nature; everything you need is there.
And when the camera fails to capture colors in all their glory, turn to ChromaQueen. I will bring the photograph to a beautiful conclusion. Color is complex, I can help.

Postscript: Color Inspiration
The color palette for the ChromaQueen site was inspired by the beautiful oranges and reds in this bird of paradise flower. That inspiration landed the photo in the top spot on the homepage.
